Ditch your dreams and follow the market instead

Lots of us have ideas about their "dream jobs". There are two contradicting views on dream jobs:

1) some see it as a life calling, we are predestined to do something on our life, to help people, do something beneficial etc, everybody should follow their dreams, and do their "dream jobs".

2) dream job is a complete social illusion. TV and other mass media are implanting ideas about "dream jobs" into our heads. Idea is false because every job is hard, no job is ideal, and there are not enough "dream jobs" around. Everybody want to do arts or modelling, but it is simply not economically sustainable.

Truth is probably somewhere in between. We are certainly going to be more motivated to work if we have a sense that we are helping a cause. More motivation leads to higher productivity. But on the other side, market rules are harsh. Our motivation can fade away easily when we face unemployment, disillusionment, low salary, failed expectations etc... If we don't have people to work on jobs required by market, economy faces distortions and lack of growth.

It is an unpleasant truth we are all aware of. Some are willing to sacrifice to work on their dream job, but some people aren't. Also, only the fittest will succeed to work on their dream jobs. Competition is hard, and some of us will fail.

What to do? Are you sure you can succeed? Wanting or dreaming is not enough. Success is sometimes determined by pure luck. You have to be better than others.

Why not listen to the market? Especially if you are undecided or unsure.

1) Be marketable now and in the future

Analyze the situation carefully before you make decision. Which occupations are faced with lack of skilled workers? Which industry is experiencing growth? Is that growth sustainable? Where is the demand for jobs higher than the supply of workers?

2) Choose generally higher paid work positions

Some jobs are generally higher paid, even though there is a good supply of workers. It is always better to work at a higher paid job. With more money you can follow your hobbies after work.

3) Don't forget your abilities

Choose a career according to your abilities. Know your weaknesses. If you choose career where your abilities will be fully used, you'll be more productive.

4) Be flexible, have an alternative

Be aware that markets change fast. Technology changes, new standards appear. Be ready to change careers. You need to be flexible.

5) Work hard

You have to work hard and prove yourself. Everybody likes hard workers. You need to work on your constant education and improvement beyond the current job requirements.
